Equiscan

SHINING A LIGHT ON YOUR HORSE'S HEALTH

The results from our Equiscan health checks that we carry out at The Equum Clinic have helped improve health and in some cases, prolong lives.

We have seen many cases of inflammatory conditions spotted early thanks to our advanced scanning and assessment techniques.

The information has been used by our clients to subsequently treat and improve their horses health.

Below are some of the case studies that we have been proud to be part of.

Case Study - Horse S, Age 12

Hind Gut Issues - detected and treated

Horse S was experiencing symptoms of girthing, poor performance and general fatigue. The client has been advised that their horse may have ulcer or gut inflammation.

The client wanted to try a non invasive method before opting for scoping and

contacted The Equum. DNA samples for Horse S were received by The Equum for analysis.

The Equiscan report highlighted severe inflammation in the hind gut (cecum region) caused by parasite infection.

For 2 months, the client followed an independent course of treatment which included supplementation with Ron Fields Nutrition Products, a leading UK brand.

The follow up Equiscan showed a marked improvement in gut health. More importantly, Horse S was much happier in his daily activities and showed no further adverse symptoms.

It is highly probable that the early detection of gut inflammation and its subsequent

treatment at an early stage helped Horse S regain better health swiftly ... and painlessly.

Case Study - Horse D, Age 16

Severe Lameness - Musculoskeletal Damage detected

Horse D was experiencing huge problems with mobility.

He was suffering from severe lameness, limping and only walking in 360 degree circles. As a result, his head was also slightly leaning to one side.

Horse D was previously a racehorse and the diagnosis provided by the Vet was structural damage in the hip and pelvic region. The client had been advised (by the Vet) that Horse D’s damage was so severe and beyond repair that he should be euthanised immediately.

The client wanted to try an Equiscan to see if anything else would come to light before acceptance of having to put Horse D down.

Whilst the hip and pelvic abnormality was found, The Equiscan also highlighted severe inflammation and shoulder disorder in Horse D which may also be contributing to the lameness. This seemed to have gone undetected by the Vet.

Spinal nerve damage was also detected at C5 & C7 levels. Furthermore, an ear

infection was also detected which may explain the head shaking.

All of these factors may have been contributing to Horse D’s condition. Results from the Equiscan have given Horse D’s owner some hope and before accepting Euthanasia, Horse D’s life is being prolonged with the new areas highlighted by the Equiscan now being investigated.

Case Study - Horse P, Age 12

Girthing & Canter Issues - Fore Gut Ulcers detected

Horse P’s owner was concerned about her horses girthiness and struggling in canter and was wondering if it could be related to a digestive problem.

The Equiscan Gut Wellness report highlighted possible stomach nerve inflammation, blocked lymph nodes, inflammation in the duodenum and an indication of fore gut ulcers. Pathological analysis also suggested a high level of parasite activity in some of these regions.

All of these findings could present themselves as pain, discomfort, irritability and could be contributing factors to Horse P’s condition. Suitable supplementation was recommended and Horse P has started on her journey to better health.

Case Study - Horse R, Age 15

Irritability, Colic, Sensitive Areas - Multiple Issues detected

Horse R’s symptoms included the above and also problems with girthing and grooming.

The Equiscan report highlighted inflammation in the celiac artery and celiac nerves respectively. This helped provide an insight into the probable cause of colic symptoms. Possible stomach and hind gut ulcer presence was also detected. Findings from the Equiscan could be presenting themselves as pain, discomfort, irritability and could be worthy of further investigation.
